"I like to tell people that being gay is a part of me, it’s not all of me. I am a multifaceted artist; I’m also trained in theater, dance, and music. I think being gay has had an effect on that. It’s been a challenge to navigate life and all of its normal obstacles, and layer on top of that that I am gay. Because it is a different set of challenges and obstacles in a rural community. "

"Our region is rich in our arts and cultural heritage. That’s what my job is too. But we are storytellers here. People can’t grow stronger and more resilient without knowing what other generations experienced. I’ve grown a lot from stories of LGBTQ folks in the region that I’ve met over time, and values that I have picked up from them. You find strength in that. "

“I think this is where a lot of disconnect is in the multiple facets of folks that exist here. It’s not meant to be understood. And we aren’t capable of understanding, cause it’s not us. You can’t understand what it is like to be an old gay white gay man in Eastern Kentucky like I can. I can’t understand what it is like to be a lesbian in Eastern Kentucky. I can’t understand that it is like to be a trans person in Eastern Kentucky. And I can’t understand. And it’s not my place to understand, it’s my place to show respect, support, and love. That’s my place."
